Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre

The Two Row - Row Toronto Program
with Hanlan Boat Club

From May 21st to June 13th, Hanlan Boat Club near Cherry Beach welcomed youth, staff, and community members fromToronto Council Fire for a unique rowing program. This partnership was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn, grow, and connect.

To start the partnership off in a good way, Kevin Myran offered an opening smudge and prayer. This ceremony not only set a positive tone for the program but also introduced the Hanlan community to our traditions.

Over four weeks, 21 Council Fire participants, ranging in age from 10 to 60, learned both sweep (single oar) and sculling (two oar) rowing. Family members often came to support and cheer from the shore. Each week, participants grew more confident and skilled on the water, practicing their rowing techniques.

One memorable moment was when Olympic rower Phil Monckton visited. He shared his experiences and answered questions, inspiring all of us.

We wrapped up the program with a closing song by Anthony Gladue and a BBQ. It was a joyful celebration where we handed out certificates to recognize everyone’s hard work.

A big thank you to the Hanlan Boat Club staff, including Sunny Edmunds and Head Coach Horacio Tendilla, and all the volunteer coaches. Your generosity and enthusiasm made this program special. Thanks also to Kevin Myran and Anthony Gladue for the ceremonies, and to Wanina Phipps-Walker for providing meals.

The Two Row – Row Toronto Program was about more than just rowing. It was about teamwork, community, and sharing our culture.
